Frequently Asked Questions
What do I need to start learning to drive?
To begin driving on public roads, you must:
-
Be at least 17 years old
-
Hold a valid UK provisional driving licence
-
Be able to read a vehicle number plate from at least 20.5 metres away
Do you offer both manual and automatic driving lessons?
We specialise in automatic driving lessons only, providing focused training to help you learn more efficiently.
How many lessons will I need?
The number of lessons varies for each learner, depending on your confidence, ability, and practice outside of lessons.
-
The DVSA recommends around 40 hours of professional lessons plus 20 hours of private practice.
However, our goal isn’t just to help you pass the test – it’s to ensure you become a safe and confident driver.
I have no driving experience. Will that be a problem?
Not at all! Most learners start with no experience. Our lessons are designed to teach you at a comfortable pace, and we’ll guide you step-by-step until you’re confident. You’ll be free to ask as many questions as you need – mastering the basics happens faster than you think!
Do I need to pass my theory test first?
No. You can start practical lessons before passing your theory test. In fact, learning both together can be beneficial – your practical driving experience will help you understand the theory, and vice versa.
Should I take more than one lesson per week?
It’s entirely up to you. Taking two or more lessons a week can help you progress faster, but many learners do just fine with one lesson per week.
Do I use the school car for my test?
Yes! You’ll take your test in the same car you’ve been learning in, so you’ll feel comfortable and confident.
What happens on the driving test?
Your instructor will take you to the test centre. During the test, an examiner will:
-
Assess your driving over around 45 minutes
-
Ask you to perform two manoeuvres
-
Record any driving faults (up to 15 minor faults are allowed; one serious fault would result in a fail)
It might sound intimidating, but with the right preparation, you’ll be ready and confident.
How much will it cost me to learn to drive?
Your total cost depends on the number of lessons you need. We always recommend choosing an instructor based on quality of teaching rather than price alone, as the right instructor can help you learn faster and more effectively.
